Clean and safe restrooms are an essential amenity to provide our riders. Nearly all BART stations have public restrooms and we have made the commitment to reopen all the previously closed underground restrooms as budget funds are identified and renovations have been completed. Above ground restrooms have always been open.
BART reopened the underground restrooms at Powell Street and 19th Street/Oakland in February 2022, Montgomery and Lake Merritt in June 2022, and Embarcadero and Downtown Berkeley in June 2023.
All underground restrooms in addition to El Cerrito del Norte have restroom attendants, who are on duty during all hours the stations are opened to greet riders and discourage unwanted behavior. Restrooms with attendants will be closed during staff breaks and when cleaning is taking place.
All stations have public restrooms except:
- 12th St./Oakland City Center - renovations needed.
- Civic Center/UN Plaza (San Francisco) - renovations needed.
- There is a staffed pitstop restroom located at Grove and Larkin Streets that is open daily, 7am-7pm. There is another at U.N. Plaza that is open 24 hours/day.
- 16th St. Mission (San Francisco) - a brand new restroom must be built.
- There is a staffed pitstop restroom located in the plaza that is open 24 hours/day. There is another one at 16th and Capps streets that is open Monday-Friday 11am-6pm.
- 24th St. Mission (San Francisco) - a brand new restroom must be built.
- There is a staffed pitstop restroom located in the west plaza that is open daily from 7am-7pm.
