BART is growing its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure to reduce fossil fuel consumption and support California’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal of reducing emissions by 40% below 1990 levels by 2030 as outlined in SB 32 (2016). EV charging stations at BART stations and facilities also support former Governor Brown’s Executive Order B-48-18, which sets a goal for 250,000 EV charging stations installed by 2025 and 5 million EVs on the road by 2030, and Governor Newsom’s Executive Order N-79-20, which requires that all new cars and passenger trucks sold in California are zero-emission vehicles by 2035. BART’s EV Charging Policy was adopted by the Board in November 2021 and has goals of Greener and Healthier Communities, Equitable Access, and Intelligent and Scalable Operations.
More details can be found in the BART Electric Vehicle Charging Policy.
BART offers EV charging stations at the Warm Springs and Lafayette stations as part of a pilot. For information on how to use the EV charging stations, please see Electric Vehicle Charging under the Parking page. If you have additional questions or comments on the EV pilot program, please email [email protected].
EV Charging at BART employee facilities
BART installed EV charging stations at two operations and maintenance facilities, which will allow BART employees who cannot take BART to work to charge their vehicle. Employees at BART’s Hayward Maintenance Complex (HMC) Component Repair Shop, HMC Central Warehouse, and eBART Maintenance Facility each have access to four Level 2 EV charging ports. Furthermore, these EV charging stations at BART facilities provide infrastructure to support the procurement of EVs as part of BART’s non-revenue fleet.
Electric vehicle charging at the Lafayette Station
BART installed EV charging stations at the Lafayette BART station. There are four Level 2 charging ports available for BART riders. The EV charging stations were the newest part of a pilot and were be studied and monitored to assess their use and effectiveness. The study determined how EV charging may be integrated into BART's parking portfolio in the future.
Electric vehicle charging at the Warm Springs Station
Warm Springs was the first BART station with EV charging stations, operational since 2017. There are 42 Level 2 charging ports available for BART riders. The EV charging stations were part of a pilot and were be studied and monitored to assess their use and effectiveness. The study determined how EV charging may be integrated into BART's parking portfolio in the future.
