BART releases platform video from July 3 officer involved shooting
The public will be able to see BART’s platform video that provides a partial view of the July 3, 2011 officer involved shooting on the platform of the Civic Center/UN Plaza BART Station. Today BART released the platform video, which contains what happened moments before the shooting, which killed 45-year-old Charles Hill.
BART officials decided to release the platform video earlier than planned
The San Francisco Police Department gave BART the green light to release the video after stating that sharing the video with the public will no longer interfere with its investigation. SFPD is the lead agency investigating the shooting. Both SFPD and BART continue with their investigations into the shooting.
“I feel it’s important to make this video public in a timely manner,” BART Interim General Manager Sherwood Wakeman said. “In earlier statements, we said we’d release the video as soon as SFPD’s investigation was complete and turned over to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. However, since SFPD said releasing it before then would not compromise its investigation I saw no reason to hold onto it, even though the case has yet to be turned over to the District Attorney.”
At a news conference Thursday, Wakeman, BART Police Chief Kenton W. Rainey and BART Independent Police Auditor Mark P. Smith met with news media. The police chief showed the platform video and explained what investigators focused on when they first viewed it.
