Temporary parking changes at Lafayette Station start mid to late June (Update)
Update: May 25, 2017
Starting in mid to late June, 2017 (this is an updated start date), we will be making improvements to station access and the parking lots at Lafayette Station. This project will increase the number of ADA-compliant parking spaces, improve signs, replace paving, improve circulation through the lots, improve pedestrian safety and access, increase motorcycle parking, and improve the bus zones and passenger drop off areas.
In addition, the project will include a number of improvements as part of our sustainability goals. We will create cleaner storm water runoff entering the Happy Valley Creek Watershed, increase the number of trees, improve other landscaping and irrigation, and add LED lighting.
New ADA accessible parking spaces will be added to Lot A at the start of the project.
During construction of Phase I, there will be one-way traffic only entering from Happy Valley Road and exiting onto Deer Hill Road. Flaggers will be in position at both the entrance and exit to help direct drivers and keep traffic flowing. Drivers who are dropping off/picking up will not be able to enter the parking area from Deer Hill Road.
The entire project will take approximately 6 months, with the first phase taking 6-8 weeks. During the Lot B closure, all ADA accessible spaces will be moved to Lot A, and Permit Parking will be relocated to Lot C. Bus, taxi, and passenger pick up/drop off will be moved to the sidewalk along the entrance road from Happy Valley Road. Motorcycle parking will move during construction as will bike lockers--look for signs to direct you to the temporary locations. Safe walking/bike paths will be available throughout the construction. Follow the signs and stay behind protective barriers.
Carpool/Permit parking on the south side of the station will not be affected.
Please see the map on the reverse of this notice for the Phase I changes. We will issue a second bulletin when Phase II begins with those changes. There will be signs and fencing around the work areas. Please watch for these and follow instructions from the work crews and BART employees.

Storm Water Project Benefits
One of the key features of the project will be installation of permeable pavers and rain gardens. These features are part of a best practice known as low impact development or LID. Conventional designs of parking lots without LID have almost entirely impermeable surfaces. That means when rain water falls, the water cannot infiltrate the ground creating a high volume of runoff. The runoff picks up pollutants like grease and litter and gets dumped directly into the storm drain system polluting local creeks and the Bay. On the other hand, LID uses natural systems to infiltrate,
capture, and treat runoff. Use of LID in the project will help protect Lafayette’s Happy Valley Creek and the Walnut Creek Watershed. Read more about the project on the project page.
