Victim kills suspect in apparent "robbery gone bad" at Fruitvale Station

BART Police have one suspect in custody following what investigators believe to be an armed robbery gone bad at the Fruitvale BART Station in which the robbery victim ended up using the suspect’s own knife to stab and kill one of his two assailants.

Police continue to ask for the public’s help in the ongoing investigation.

Around 9:30 Thursday night, a 23-year-old, out-of-state man was in the surface lot located next to the Fruitvale BART Station parking garage when two 18-year-old Oakland men approached him.  BART Police say one of the two younger men displayed a knife, while the other claimed to have a gun.  At this point, BART Police detectives believe the suspects took property from the victim.

The victim managed to grab the knife from one of the suspects and used it to stab one of the assailants, in what appears to be a self-defense move.  The two suspects fled on foot.

The victim immediately reported the robbery to the Oakland Police.  Shortly thereafter, there was a 9-1-1 call from a house near the Fruitvale Station, reporting a stabbing.  Oakland Police and BART Police believed the two reports were related and determined that the robbery suspects had a connection to the 9-1-1 call.

Oakland Police arrested the second suspect at the residence while the first suspect died in the home.  The second suspect had evidence of the robbery with him, but was not armed when police located him.

The BART Police Department is asking any potential witnesses to call its Criminal Investigations Section at 877-679-7000, ext. 7040.

The BART Police Department is not releasing any further information at this time.
