BART Board gives green light to Concord Station plaza makeover 

Using a mixture of local and state funding, the Board of Directors voted today to award a $3.2 million contract to give the Concord Station plaza a major makeover.  The transformation will include improved pedestrian access with a decorative crosswalk, an added bike lane, modern, energy-efficient lighting and a more prominent “kiss ‘n ride” zone. Additional trees will also be planted.  

The plaza redesign will better direct and connect riders to Concord's dynamic downtown.  “Developing the plan to enhance Concord Station plaza was a true team effort with the City of Concord,” BART Board Vice President Gail Murray said.  Murray represents District 1, which includes the City of Concord.  “We collaborated with the City on the overall design and the selected lighting fixtures.  The fixtures have the ability to hold banners, which is a popular way cities welcome visitors or promote their community activities.” 

When completed, the plaza will provide a well-lit, comfortable, tree-lined environment for Concord Station riders.  A combination of Prop 1B, Measure J and BART funds will be used to finance the project.  BART expects the work to begin in early 2017.  Separate from this project, Concord Station is also slated to get a bike station in the future.
