San Francisco Station Canopy Project

San Francisco Station Canopy Project

On January 23, 2020, the BART Board of Directors approved a contract to construct 19 canopies over entrances at BART stations along Market St. in downtown San Francisco.  This is in addition to two canopies previously constructed under a pilot project for a total of 21 canopies.

The canopies will not only protect new escalators being installed from the wear-and-tear of elements like rain and wind-swept debris, but they will provide an added layer of station security and cleanliness through motorized gates that allow the entrances to be locked at street level when stations are closed. The added protection from the existing canopy in Oakland has reduced escalator down time by about 30%.

Each canopy includes a real-time digital display that shows train arrival times, a retractable gate, LED lighting, security cameras, art elements, and potentially a living roof at select locations.

BART/Muni Living Roof Project

BART invited Nature in the City to design living roofs for each new canopy along Market Street to potentially serve as habitats for the Western Tiger Swallowtail butterflies and other wildlife. Learn more about the project and sponsorship opportunities

Canopy Program

Two canopies that were completed in November 2018 have proven to be successful in closing the entrances when BART is not open for service, addressing security and maintenance concerns and ensuring that employees who open the entrances are safer. One of the new canopies is above the Powell Street Station (north side of Market and Ellis Streets) and the other above the Civic Center Station (south side of Market and 7th Streets).

The contract approved by the Board includes purchasing and installing 19 canopies for $64 million as the base and includes options for 3 additional canopies once funding is identified.  The plan also includes incorporating local art into the ceiling surface material. The project to install canopies is funded by voter approved Measure RR funds, San Francisco Prop A funds, and state Prop 1A funds.

Ribbon cutting Powell

Powell Street Station: Ellis and Market Street Entrance

On November 6, 2017, our contractor built a barricade around the entrance to Powell Street Station located at Ellis & Market streets on the north side. The entrance was closed for the construction of the new protective canopy and was opened in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 13, 2018.

Civic Center Station: 7th and Market Street south side Entrance

On Monday, December 11, 2017 our contractor built a barricade around the entrance to Civic Center/UN Plaza Station located at 7th and Market streets on the south side.

Like the Powell Street Station canopy, the Civic Center canopy will include a digital display to show train arrival times, new security grille, new LED lighting, security cameras, and other improvements. The Civic Center canopy was opened on November 13, 2018.
