Project Purpose
Anticipating the opening of BART to Antioch, BART undertook a study to identify how access to stations in Eastern Contra Costa County could be improved. For North Concord/Martinez and Pittsburg/Bay Point stations and the future stations at Pittsburg Center and Antioch, the North Concord to Antioch BART Access Study identifies potential access improvement projects to enhance pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and vehicular access. The projects identified can be implemented over time and in partnership with local municipalities as funding becomes available. Access improvements include:
- New pedestrian/bicycle routes (Class I, II, III, or IV)
- New pedestrian/bicycle bridges
- Enhanced/new crosswalks
- Wayfinding
- Additional or reconfigured parking
- Intermodal facility (bus) improvements
- Reconfigured passenger pick‐up and drop‐off areas
- Operational improvements such as reduction in speed limits or signal timing adjustments
- Secure bicycle parking, improved lighting, and security features
- Accessibility improvements
- Parking management programs
Next steps on this project include:
- Collaborate with local multiplicities as needed on grant applications to identify additional funds for implementation;
- Recommend a subset of projects for additional design and/or construction funding from Measure RR;
- Monitor development proposals in the vicinity of each station to determine whether some access projects could be delivered by others;
- Incorporate relevant improvements and strategies into future BART station improvement projects and transit-oriented development; and
- Monitor station access patterns at all four stations that result from the opening of the eBART as an additional input into selecting projects for implementation.
